Frequently Asked Questions:

What types of fabric do you stock?

Fabrics on this website are 100% cotton and 110-112cm wide (42"-44") unless otherwise indicated.

We also sell cotton/linen blends and pure linen.

Wadding is available in the following mixes: 100% cotton; 50% bamboo/50% cotton blend and 80% cotton/20% polyester blend.

Should I pre-wash my fabric?

Opinions differ as to whether fabrics should be pre-washed before use.

Benefits of not pre-washing: the fabrics remain crisp and straight for accurate cutting. Any potential shrinkage (up to 5%) would be in the finished quilt.

Benefits of pre-washing: you would be guaranteed that dyes will not run in your quilt and fabrics will be pre-shrunk before use. However they do lose their straightness and are liable to distort. If you do prewash, iron them whilst slightly damp.

What are long quarters and fat quarters?

Long Quarter: is a 25cm x 110cm (approx. 9.8" x 43.3") strip of fabric cut from the bolt of fabric. These are useful is your project requires long strips.

Fat Quarter: is a 50cm x 55cm (approx. 19.5" x 21.6") strip of fabric. It is made by cutting a half metre across the full fabric width, and then cutting vertically down the central fold. This method produces two fat quarters. Fat quarters are useful for cutting larger pieces, such as for cushion backs.

What are Jelly Rolls?

Jelly rolls arrived on the scene in 2006 and they are a great way to make multi-fabric quilts without having to buy large amounts of each fabric. We only sell Jelly Rolls by Moda - the fabric manufacturer who first introduced them.

Each roll contains 40 x 2.5" strips of fabric, each cut the width of the fabric. Each roll comes from individual collections fo fabric, so the colours and patterns blend and contrast perfectly and are designed to be used together.

Jelly Rolls should never be pre-washed as they will tangle and distort.

What are Layer Cakes, Charm Packs and Mini Charm-Packs?

All are precut squares of fabric in different sizes.

  • Layer Cakes: 10"

  • Charm Packs: 5"

  • Mini Charm Packs: 2.5"

They are all made by Moda and each pack contains 42 squares of co-ordinated fabrics. They are particularly useful for beginner quilters as they can be cut into different shapes or just sewn together for quick projects.

None of these should be pre-washed as they will fray and distort.
